- Wilpattu Season
Best Time to Experience Wildlife in the Park
Discover how Wilpattu changes throughout the year, from lush green monsoon landscapes to dry-season wildlife hotspots. Each season offers unique safari experiences and different opportunities to see animals in their natural behavior.
Dry Season (Best Wildlife Viewing)
Months: May – September
During the dry season, water levels in the Villus (natural lakes) decrease, causing wildlife to gather around remaining water sources. This is the best time for spotting leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and crocodiles in open areas with excellent visibility.
Wet Season (Green Wilderness & Scenic Views)
Months: October – January
The park transforms into a lush green paradise with full lakes and fresh vegetation. Wildlife spreads across the forest, but this season offers beautiful landscapes, dramatic skies, and peaceful safari experiences.
Birding Season (Migratory Birds)
Months: November – April
This is the peak time for birdwatching, as migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia. Wetlands and Villus become active feeding grounds for waterbirds, waders, and rare migratory species.
Leopard Viewing (Best Chances Year-Round)
Best Times: February – September (Peak Dry Conditions)
Leopards can be seen throughout the year, but dry season months offer the highest chances due to better visibility and concentrated prey movement near water sources. Early morning and evening safaris are most productive.

Local Expertise Behind Wilpattu Safaria
Bhashitha Jayathilake, founder of Wilpattu Safaria, is a proud local from Galkadawala Village on the edge of Wilpattu National Park. Having grown up surrounded by the park’s wilderness, he developed a deep passion for wildlife, birds, and nature from an early age.
With over 8 years of professional wildlife tracking experience, including serving as a Volunteer Tracker with the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), Bhashitha is highly respected for his exceptional ability to track the elusive Sri Lankan leopard by reading footprints, interpreting alarm calls, and understanding animal behaviour. His unmatched local knowledge and field experience provide guests with an authentic, educational, and unforgettable safari experience, making every journey through Wilpattu truly special.
